SIA President Tom Stroup Testifies Before House Communications & Technology Subcommittee Hearing Regarding The Critical Importance Of Satellites

Washington, D.C., February 3, 2023 – The Satellite Industry Association (SIA) yesterday testified on the growing importance of satellites before the House Communications and Technology subcommittee hearing titled “Launching Into the State of the Satellite Marketplace.” SIA President Tom Stroup provided testimony on behalf of the Association.

In late January, House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) and incoming Communications and Technology Subcommittee Chair Bob Latta (R-OH) announced that the first Communications and Technology subcommittee hearing would be focused on ensuring America continues to lead in the burgeoning satellite communications industry.

“Satellites are the backbone of modern society,” said Tom Stroup. “We rely on them for communications, position, navigation and timing, and remote sensing across the globe. In addition to the vast range of services offered by the industry today, the companies represented by SIA are poised to lead the U.S. into an interconnected and data-driven future. The American satellite industry is set to revolutionize daily life as we move into a more interconnected world where change on Earth is more visible than ever.”

During the hearing, Mr. Stroup was joined by fellow witnesses Julie Zoller, Head of Global Regulatory Affairs, Project Kuiper at Amazon, Jennifer Manner, Senior Vice President of Regulatory Affairs, EchoStar Corporation, Margo Deckard, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer, Lynk Global, Inc., and Kari Bingen, Director, Aerospace Security Project and Senior Fellow, International Security Program, Center for Strategic and International Studies.
