Satellite Industry Association Encouraged by Proposed Indian Legislation to Assign Spectrum to Satellite-Based Services by Administrative Process

Washington, D.C., December 19, 2023 – The Satellite Industry Association (SIA) today stated that it is encouraged by the proposed Telecommunications Bill, 2023 in India that specifies an administrative process to assigning spectrum for satellite-based services rather than an auction.  The proposal was tabled for approval in India’s Parliament and included in new draft legislation for the telecommunications sector.  The bill seeks to replace the 138-year old Indian Telegraph Act with an aim to keep pace with the growth of technology.

“SIA is encouraged by the Indian proposal to assign spectrum to satellite-based services via an administrative process, and not via auction” said Tom Stroup, president of the Satellite Industry Association. “This will facilitate the ability of satellite service providers to offer affordable, ubiquitous and reliable services to the billions of unserved customers throughout the globe.”
