Satellite Industry Association Congratulates Howard Lutnick on Being Confirmed as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce

Washington, D.C., February 19, 2025 – The Satellite Industry Association (SIA) today congratulated Howard Lutnick after he was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as Secretary of the United States Department of Commerce. The Commerce Department has several offices and departments responsible for commercial space policy including NTIA, NOAA, BIS and the Office of Space Commerce (OSC), which oversee much of the regulatory framework and direct the growth and technological advancement of the U.S. commercial space industry.

“SIA congratulates Howard Lutnick following his confirmation as the new Secretary of Commerce,” said Tom Stroup, president of the Satellite Industry Association. “Throughout his career, Mr. Lutnick has demonstrated leadership and a strong appreciation for the value of technology. SIA and its members look forward to working with Secretary Lutnick and all those at Commerce responsible for space policy to help ensure America’s continued leadership in space-based technological innovation and dominant position in the rapidly expanding global space economy.”

This is a critical time for the commercial space industry. Thanks to tremendous leaps in space-based technology and innovation, the industry is growing at an unprecedented rate. There are approximately 12,000 satellites operating in Earth orbit compared with just 2,500 in 2019. Satellites not only provide communications, broadband, Earth observation, video and other services to enterprise customers and hundreds of millions of American consumers each day, but they are also vital for government, defense and first responder/natural disaster applications.
