Dr. Scott Pace Receives 2019 Satellite Leadership Award

Washington, D.C., May 7, 2019 – The Satellite Industry Association (SIA) announced the recipient of the Association’s satellite industry leadership award at this year’s satellite industry Leadership Dinner in Washington, DC.  SIA President Tom Stroup presented the 2019 Satellite Leadership in Government Award to Dr. Scott Pace, currently the Executive Secretary of the National Space Council. The award recognizes Dr. Pace’s distinguished career in the space industry.

In July 2017, President Trump appointed Dr. Scott Pace as the Executive Secretary of the National Space Council which is tasked with advising and assisting the President regarding national space policy and strategy.  Prior to his appointment, Dr. Pace was the Director of the Space Policy Institute and Professor of the Practice of International Affairs at George Washington University.

At NASA, Dr. Pace was the Associate Administrator for Program Analysis and Evaluation.  He previously served as Chief Technologist for Space Communications in NASA’s Office of Space Operations.  Dr. Pace also previously served as the Deputy Chief of Staff to the NASA Administrator Sean O’Keefe.  Prior to NASA, Dr. Pace was the Assistant Director for Space and Aeronautics in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). Prior to his White House appointment, Dr. Pace worked for the RAND Corporation’s Science and Technology Policy Institute (STPI).

In addition to his extensive research into space policy, technology policy, and international competitiveness at RAND, he was also was a key member of a successful international effort to preserve radio navigation satellite spectrum at the 1997 World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-97) and the addition of new spectrum for satellite navigation at WRC-2000.

SIA’s Satellite Leadership in Government Award is traditionally presented to a current or former government official or member of Congress who has demonstrated long-term leadership and dedication to public service on issues affecting the satellite industry and has served as an example to others in government.

The Award has been awarded to fifteen previous recipients, including the FCC’s Jose Albuquerque (2018), FCC OET Chief Julius Knapp (2017), General John W. Raymond (2016), Karl Nebbia for his work with the NTIA (2015), Richard Beaird of the State Department (2013), Brian Nilsson of the White House National Security Staff (2012), Rural Utilities Service Administrator Jonathan Adelstein (2011); Major General Ellen Pawlikowski (2010); General James Cartwright and Mr. Richard Russell, Ambassador to the 2007 World Radiocommunication Conference (2008); Representative Ellen Tauscher and Maj. Gen. James B. Armor Jr. (2007); Senator Ted Stevens (2006); and Admiral James O. Ellis Jr. and Tom Tycz, Federal Communications Commission (2005).
